What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects a patient's attention and mood. It is characterized by an inability to focus, episodes of impulsivity, and excessive motions that can affect development, especially in younger patients. ADHD can be divided into three distinct forms:
- Inattentive type ADHD
- Hyperactive/Impulsive type ADHD
- Combined type ADHD
Patients with ADHD can show one or more of the following symptoms:
- lack of focus
- disorganized
- excessively fidgeting, restlessness or talking
- hasty decisions
- inability to listen when spoken to one-on-one
- inability to follow instructions
- frequently losing things
- making mistakes
- forgetful
What Are the Benefits of Integrative Approaches to Treating ADD/ADHD?
There are multiple benefits to using integrative approaches to managing ADHD and its symptoms. Diagnosis of ADHD in adults is typically made by licensed professionals such as psychologists or psychiatrists with clinical expertise in ADHD. Patients must have experienced symptoms of ADHD before the age of 12. Using natural approaches to ADHD does not involve narcotics and is non-invasive, allowing for patients to practice therapies even after they feel great as a way of maintaining a high level of wellness.
Common non-drug therapies to manage ADHD symptoms include:
- changes to diet
- herbal supplements
- cognitive behavior therapy
- meditation
- yoga
- biofeedback
What to Expect During an Integrative ADD/ADHD Treatment Session
If you've never had an integrative ADHD treatment before, you might be wondering what to expect during your first appointment. A licensed clinician at Chris Strickland will begin by asking you a series of in-depth questions to determine your current health, including any symptoms you may be experiencing. Your diet, exercise habits, and quality of sleep, as well as mental and emotional well-being, will all be evaluated. From there, your doctor will prescribe one or several forms of treatment to address your symptoms, including:
- dietary changes, including vitamin supplements
- naturopathy
- yoga
- meditation
- CBT
- biofeedback, including neurofeedback therapies
Effective ADHD symptom management requires accurate evaluation and prompt care using safe, effective integrative techniques.
